Nigerian man falls from 5th floor fleeing police

-

PETALING JAYA: A Nigerian man incurred a broken nose and arm in his attempt to flee from authorities during an operation against illegal immigrants in Damansara Perdana here on Friday.

The man, in his 30s, tried to evade the raiding team by climbing off the balcony of a fifth-floor apartment in the area.

He clung to a satellite dish in hopes of not being spotted, but it failed to accommodate his weight and came loose from the wall, causing him to fall five storeys to the ground.

The raiding team apprehended the man, and checks revealed that he did not have valid documentation.

He was taken to Sungai Buloh Hospital.

The Nigerian was one of 51 people arrested during the operation, codenamed “Op Black Flora”, conducted by the police in a joint effort with the Immigration Department and the Petaling Jaya City Council.

Selangor police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said 171 foreigners from various countries residing at the apartment building were checked.

“A total of 43 men and eight women were detained for failing to produce valid documentation.

“They comprised 37 Nigerians, four each from Uganda and Indonesia, two from India, and one each from Kenya, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand.

“Action will be taken under the Immigration Act,” he said.

Police conducted urine tests on the detainees. Ten foreigners tested positive for drug use.

The four-hour operation, which started at 7pm, saw the raiding team entering 70 apartment units and three shops that they had identified as homes of some of the foreigners.

Forty-four police officers and 368 rank-and-file personnel from various units, including the Criminal Investigation Department and Air Wing, were involved in the exercise.
