2 MORE HELD OVER ASSAULT AT NAVAL UNIT
Suspects arrested after more mistreatment reports surface
TWO more Royal Malaysian Navy men have stepped forward, claiming that they were physically assaulted by their colleagues at the RMN detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan.
The fresh claims came in the wake of the deaths of two other navy men, Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Sukri, 26, at the centre.
The two men lodged police reports on the alleged assault yesterday. They are currently receiving medical treatment at Lumut Military Hospital for abdominal injuries.
Perak police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the latest victims were in their 30s.
“We are recording statements from the victims. We have yet to determine whether the assaults occurred in the (detention) room or outside (within the detention unit compound).”
Following the complaint, police have arrested two RMN personnel, aged 29 and 37, stationed at the detention unit.
This brings the number of navy personnel arrested in connection with the two cases to five, so far.
Hasnan said the case was being investigated under Sections 325 and 506 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt and punishment for criminal intimidation.
“We are scrutinising the CCTV footage at the unit. We will leave no stone unturned. We want to know what really happened there,” he said.
Hasnan said federal police and state Criminal Investigation Department were working on the case together.
In the earlier case, Baihaqy and Lailatulman died at the detention room while undergoing physical training at the camp on Friday.
During the training, the two personnel complained of exhaustion and were allowed to rest. Later, they vomited and experienced shortness of breath before dying.
Their deaths were confirmed by paramedics who arrived at 3.15pm.
A post-mortem showed that they had been “tortured”. Both men had bleeding in the lungs and suffered soft tissue injuries.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein had pledged that there would be nothing hidden in the investigations, and said those found guilty would not escape legal action.
