Pakistan out to regain glory

-

PAKISTAN aim to reverse their fortunes in the Asia Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Oct 11-22.

Farhat Khan’s side were once world and Olympic champions, but their results of late have been poor. His team did not qualify for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The Asia Cup doubles up as a qualifier for next year’s World Cup, but there will be no pressure for Pakistan as they have already made the cut.

World No 14 Pakistan are in Group A with India (No 6), Japan (No 17) and Bangladesh (No 34).

Group A comprise World No 12 Malaysia, South Korea (No 13), China (No 18) and Oman (No 30).

For the record, Pakistan have won three Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles along with countless successes in the Champions Trophy and Asian Games.

“We have already qualified for next year’s World Cup in India, so our main focus will be on performing well in Dhaka,” said Farhat on the Asian Hockey Federation website

“The tournament is tough as it gathers the best teams in Asia with India being the strongest on paper.

“But surprises can happen in hockey. We need to improve in all areas in order for us to win the Asia Cup.

“It has been tough times of late for Pakistan, but we want to get back on track in Dhaka.”

Malaysia will name their squad tomorrow. Jugjet Singh
