You are what you believe

-

IWENT for a class last weekend to learn about ancestral roots. It was a lesson in the origins of human beings and why it’s important to know where we come from. It seems that by having a better understanding of this, we’d be able to unlock thoughts in our subconscious so we can understand ourselves better.

You may think I’m foolish to believe in something yet to be scientifically proven.

However, judging by the turnout that day, it seems that I’m not the only one who’s curious to find out.

The class was attended by people who believe in the existence of aliens; not the sort that’s usually portrayed in the movies as the participants were intrigued about the different types of genetics we carry in our DNA that may originate from these beings that live on other planets.

Haven’t you sometimes found yourself pondering this question whenever you look up at the sky at night and see the stars? Haven’t you ever wondered whether we may not be alone after all?

Have you already drawn your own conclusion about aliens? Or perhaps, you think it’s all nonsense. Actually, it all boils down to your belief system. Do you immediately shut out information that you perceive to be unreal because of how you’ve been trained to think? Or do you stay open-minded and listen before forming your conclusions?

CREATING OUR BELIEF SYSTEM

Our belief system is created by an intricate web of information and thoughts that comprises many aspects, such as what our parents, ancestors and school system taught us, our religion, the influence of television and friends as well as other influences on the conscious and the subconscious.

When we combine all these with our experiences and emotional charge on the information we receive, we end up creating a strong belief, or a weak one, regarding a particular thought.

The more thoughts on something and the more our experience reinforces these thoughts, the more concrete they remain in our minds. And that leads to belief formation.

I use the phrase “don’t talk to strangers” on my clients when I want to elaborate on this. We heard our parents tell us this over and over again when we were children. We’re led to believe that strangers are evil and are out to get us.

As we grow older and wiser, we eventually decide that not all strangers are bad. Only then we start to create a new belief.

Beliefs such as money is hard to come by, you must work and study hard to achieve things in life and that finding true love is impossible as relationships are difficult tend to remain true to us until the day we discover otherwise. It’s only then that we may open up to the possibilities that things can be different.

TIME TO REFLECT

So what’s your life been like? Have you been adopting other people’s belief systems as your own and, in the process, not allowed yourself the freedom to think your own thoughts?

Have you limited yourself by slaving away at a job you do not love because everyone keeps telling you that the economy is bad and you can’t find another job ?

Or have you been pressured to get married because people told you that you have reached marriageable age, only to find out years later, with kids in tow, that you married the wrong person? How much of your life have you compromised out of fear of the unknown?

What if you start questioning your thoughts and reflect on why you think the way you do about certain aspects of your life or revisit the decisions that you’ve made? Did you make fear-based decisions and worry incessantly? Or have you followed what everyone else does?

Our mind is so malleable that as fast as new information becomes our new truth, it can be easily dropped when we choose to discard it. All it takes is an open mind to embrace the fact that anything can become truth when we believe it.

You can choose to believe that good things are happening in your life; that you don’t need to live in fear of something that hasn’t even happened yet; that angels and fairies are real; and that we carry the DNA and intelligence of other beings!

Believe that we’re special in our own way and that life can be a great experience. So choose your beliefs wisely as they will ultimately shape the outcomes in your life.
