KOTA KINABALU: More arrests will be made in the alleged rape of a national diving athlete if investigations show that there is a need to do so.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the arrest could help wrap up the investigations.

“So far, we have arrested a man. I think we have arrested the main suspect, but it depends on the development of our probe.

“We have also seized a closed-circuit television camera, and referred to chemists and pathologists to conclude our investigations over the alleged rape of a national diver.”

Fuzi was speaking at the investiture in conjunction with the 64th birthday celebration of Sabah Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Istana Negeri here.

Fuzi was conferred the Seri Panglima Darjah Kinabalu award, which carries the title “Datuk Seri”.

On whether there were other victims, Fuzi said there was none.

“We have recorded statements from 18 people.

“We will complete the investigation papers and submit them to the AttorneyGeneral’s Chambers soon.”

On Monday, police arrested a 35year-old aquatics coach from China, following a report lodged by a national diver on Sept 30.

The coach allegedly raped the underaged diver on Sept 26 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.

The accused has been working in the country for more than five years.

He is said to be married to a Malaysian and has a permanent resident status.

Kuala Lumpur police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa yesterday said the coach would be remanded until Wednesday.
