KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic heading for Bangi was backed up for 6km yesterday following a fatal accident involving two heavy vehicles early in the morning.

The incident at Km302.7 of the North-South Expressway at 4.30am saw a 10-tonne lorry driver killed when his vehicle crashed into a trailer lorry laden with rubber wood.

“The crash caused the 10tonne lorry to burst into flames. The driver was trapped,” said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Muhamad Hissam Sidik.

The driver’s body was sent to Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem. The driver of the trailer and his assistant, both 28, escaped unhurt.

The department deployed 10 firemen to the scene after receiving a distress call.

The 10-tonne lorry was destroyed in the fire.

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Dzaffir Mohd Yussof said police were identifying the deceased and looking for his next of kin.

“Investigations revealed that the trailer, heading from Kuala Lipis to Nilai, had changed lanes from the left to the middle.

“The 10-tonne lorry, which was in the middle lane, failed to avoid the trailer and crashed into it.”

A PLUS spokesman said traffic started to build up in the area about 8am.

“Traffic is at a crawl in both directions for about 6km. PLUS has opened a contraflow lane to ease congestion.”
