Malaysia urged to go big on go-kart races

-

MERCEDES boss Toto Wolff suggested Malaysia go big on go-kart competitions if the country is to produce world class Formula One drivers.

Sad at seeing Malaysia hold its last F1 race recently, Wolff hopes to see the nation grow when it comes to the sport as Malaysia has a special place in his heart.

“I think it’s about starting early and providing a good ground in go-karting,” he said,

“The best championships are in Europe. I think you should start and build the link groundwork and setup a local Asia gokart championship where the kids can enter.”

Wolff, who came for the Formula One Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix, believes grassroots is the foundation of all successfull things, including F1.

“Thinking back, when I was 14 years old and seeing how kids are these days, they progress quicker.”

Wolff ’s son, Benedict, was also in Malaysia to participate in the F1 in Schools in Sunway.

Speaking to Timesport about his passion in regard to engineering, the younger Wolff said he did it for his future.

“I thought it would look good on my CV,” he said.

However, Benedict, 16. disclosed that he did not want to follow in the footsteps of his father and step mother Susie (both former racing drivers) as he wants to pursue his own dream.

“I want to study medicine when I’m older.” Farah Azharie
