Breast cancer survivors appreciate life more

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Aiming to break the stereotype surrounding breast cancer patients, survivors are advocating that they lead a healthier lifestyle.

Typically, cancer patients are seen as being sickly, weak and tend to stay at home to rest, said Stage Two breast cancer survivor Ratnawati Abu Bakar,

45.

She was one of the participants in the Wacoal Pink Ribbon Fun Ride 2017, which promotes breast cancer awareness .

The mother of three was diagnosed with the disease in 2003.

She said she felt helpless and was overwhelmed by sadness when she found out about her condition, which affects one in 19 Malaysian women.

However, with the help of family, friends, advocacy groups and nongovernmental organisations, she made changes for herself and society.

“You must have a positive attitude at all times.

“My advice to newly diagnosed cancer patients is to take it all in their stride because only you can overcome this.

“Even though you have support from your family and friends, the courage you need is within you,” she said. “I see my condition as a challenge and also as a blessing.

“Now, I appreciate life more than ever,” said Ratnawati who travelled from Kuantan with her family to take part in the event.

Housewife Ummi Salmah Hashim, a Stage Three cancer patient, said motivation was good for recovering cancer patients and more of them should participate in events, such as the 25km cycling event, as it was not too physically demanding.

Ummi, who completed radiotherapy treatment three weeks ago, said it was advisable for cancer patients to have proper rest after treatment, but said she enjoyed the company of her friends at the event.

“Confidence is key. Without it, you would not be able to live a fulfilling life.

“I took part in today’s event because it gives me the motivation to enjoy life with my family and friends.

“Also, picking hobbies that promote a healthier lifestyle gives you a more positive outlook on life.

“Despite my diagnosis, I can fill my time with hobbies that benefit me,” she added.

Ummi and Ratnawati are among seven breast cancer survivors who participated in the event, which was co-organised by New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd and Wacoal Malaysia for the fifth consecutive year.
