Fresh, frozen fish sold at discounted price
SUNGAI BULOH: Households in Saujana Utama here can now enjoy fresh and frozen fish at discounted prices with the launch of the “Jom Makan Ikan” programme yesterday.
An initiative of the Fisheries Development Board (LKIM), the programme enables consumers to buy sea fish at MyBeli Mini Market at 20 to 50 per cent below market price.
LKIM chairman Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim said the programme was part of the board’s campaign to reduce the cost of living, and he planned to widen its implementation nationwide.
He said the initiative saw LKIM working with the National Fishermen Association (NFA) and Selangor Fishermen Association to bring fish products directly to consumers, thus eliminating the role of middlemen.
“We want to see the effectiveness of this method in the Klang Valley first before implementing it in other states,” he said.
Irmohizam said LKIM also urged grocery cooperatives to get their supply of fresh seafood directly from NFA.
He said this would enable the businesses to acquire the products without having to go through middlemen, reduce their costs and sell seafood to consumers at affordable prices.
“The function of cooperatives is important in reducing the cost of living, especially for people living in the Klang Valley,” said Irmohizam.
“I am urging the NFA to engage more cooperatives to become their agents or stockists to sell fresh fish, or Q’Fish frozen products, at set prices.”
On the 2018 Budget, Irmohizam said he hoped the Federal Government would consider three things to help the fisheries sector next year.
He said these included extending the fishermen’s livelihood allowance to 75 years; more efforts to eliminate the role of middlemen and increase the supply of frozen fish to maintain affordable prices; and incentives in the form of house repairs for fishermen.
