NAVY MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER

Two others charged with voluntaril­y causing hurt

AMEMBER of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) was charged at the magistrate’s court here yesterday with the murder of two navy sailors at the Sungai Wangi detention unit in Sitiawan last month.

Leading Rate Mohd Izhrifikri Roslee, 29, who was clad in an orange lock-up uniform, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read before magistrate Nur Shaqira Ibrahim. No plea was recorded.

Izhrifikri was accused of murdering Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad LailatuIma­n Mohd Sukri, 26, between 10.30am and 3.20pm at the training field of the detention unit on Sept 29.

Nur Shaqira set Dec 12 for mention.

RMN Leading Rate Hamzah Zakaria @ Ali, 35, pleaded not guilty to voluntaril­y causing hurt to the two victims in front of the detention unit’s walkway about 10.30am on Sept 29.

He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of oneyear imprisonme­nt and RM2,000 fine upon conviction.

Leading Rate Mohd Farid Musa, 32, was charged with voluntaril­y causing hurt to Nik Baihaqy at the detention unit’s guardpost about 12.30am on Sept 28.

He pleaded not guilty.

The trio were on guard duty at the detention unit.

Nur Shaqira set Oct 30 for mention of the two navy men’s cases and granted RM4,000 bail for each of the charges.

There was heavy police presence both inside and outside the courtroom.

It was reported that the victims, who were of Able Seaman rank, had complained of exhaustion while undergoing training at the detention unit.

They were given immediate treatment after vomiting and suffering shortness of breath, but were later declared dead by

medical personnel.

Post-mortem reports revealed that they succumbed to lung bleeding, believed to be due to torture.

Two navy men who underwent training at the unit later also lodged reports on alleged assault by navy personnel.
