KUALA TERENGGANU: Recent events in Kuala Nerus and here have revealed a lack of civic consciousness among the public, with rubbish strewn all over the venues.

This has given a negative image to tourists who come to witness mega events involving superbikers, an international parajumping show, TV3’s Jom Heboh, a food truck carnival and a mammoth Pas political gathering.

Residents were irked by the irresponsible manner garbage was deliberately thrown around, especially during the “Visit Beautiful Terengganu 2017” event.

R.Z. Fishal hoped the authorities would take appropriate action.

ACTIONLINE:

Kuala Terengganu City Council mayor Zulkifli Abu Bakar blamed the organisers for not providing sufficient garbage bins and not engaging workers to regularly clean up the mess.

“At the same time, the attitude of the people leaves much to be desired.

“They should exercise civic consciousness by taking care of the environment and helping keep the venues clean,” he said.

Zulkifli added that the council imposes deposits on event organisers, whether government agencies or private organisations.

“We may look at tightening the regulations for organisers of such events in the future.

“In the meantime, we like to advise organisers and the public to stop bringing takeaway food and beverages.

“Instead, patrons should be encouraged to enjoy their meals at the outlets,” he said.

Also, the mayor said more cleanliness campaigns should be held.

“Provide more garbage disposal bins. Garbage ought to be monitored by mobile units and collected regularly,” he said.
