Poor turnout at rally

-

PETALING JAYA: All the hype over the Pakatan Harapan-led “AntiKleptocracy Rally” yesterday fizzled out as the organisers failed to achieve its target of attracting 100,000 people.

The demonstration, which were attended by Pakatan Harapan pro-tem chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, was held at Padang Timur.

Speeches by the pact’s heads, as well as opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, began at 9pm.

The rally started at 4pm and ended late in the evening.

Rally organiser have been holding talks in an attempt to mobilise the expected 100,000 people.

Police had disapproved of the event, citing possible traffic congestion as the main reason, but the organisers insisted on holding the rally at the same place.

Police said action would be taken against the organiser under the Peaceful Assembly Act as the organisers had failed to obtain a permit.

Earlier, a picture showing an opposition supporter stomping on a doll’s head labelled with “MO1” (Malaysia Official No. 1) has angered Netizens.

An English daily reported that Facebook users condemned the action as being disrespectful.

Among them, Danny Liew said: “The former PM that is there today (yesterday) would have initiated ‘Langkah Kamunting’ without batting his eyes,” he said, in an apparent reference to former premier Dr Mahathir.

The Facebook post, however, has been removed.
