ALOR STAR: Preparations for Deepavali have gained momentum among the Indian community here as the Festival of Lights is less than a week away.

For trader S. Nurissini, 21, who sells traditional Indian clothes in Jalan Langgar here, the festive mood has brought with it more shoppers and more business to her shop.

She said since a few days ago, many had come to her shop to buy clothes.

“The clothes I sell are priced affordably, with prices ranging from RM35 to RM1,500, based on the material.

“Each day, I have sold between 30 and 100 pairs of clothes,” she said yesterday.

Nurissini said among the clothes she sold were saris, kurtas and lehengas, and her customers came from all walks of life.

On her family’s preparations for Deepavali, Nurissini said they would gather at her grandparents’ house in Alor Semadom for the celebration.

She said her family was busy preparing food to serve on Deepavali day, including tosai and muruku.

“We will decorate our house the day before Deepavali by drawing a kolam, while on Deepavali day, we will attend a morning prayer at a temple before continuing with the celebration.”

Nurissini said she hoped this Deepavali would bring joy, prosperity and happiness to Malaysians.
