Hamid and son-in-law released on bail

-

KOTA KINABALU: Hamid Apdal, the younger brother of Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, and Hamid’s son-in law, who were both remanded as part of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) probe into the misappropriation of federal funds for Sabah projects, were released on bail yesterday.

They were among nine people arrested to assist in the commission’s investigation.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie granted RM50,000 bail with two local sureties for Hamid, who was remanded for nine days.

Abbie conducted the release procedure at the KPJ Damai Specialist Hospital here. She arrived at the hospital at 9.50am and left about 10 minutes later.

Hamid was warded at the hospital on Oct 15, after his remand order was extended.

Prosecuting officer Mohd Faliq Basiruddin represented MACC.

Hamid was detained on Oct 10 by MACC at its office here after he was called in to give a statement.

His counsel, Martin Tommy, said Hamid’s health was improving, and that he would be discharged from the hospital.

“(Hamid) will have to go to the MACC office to sign release papers,” he said.

Hamid’s son-in-law, Manzur Hussein Awal Khan, 37, was also released on bail after his five-day remand expired yesterday. Manzur was also hospitalised following his arrest.

Abbie, who arrived at the private hospital where Manzur was warded at 10.20am, conducted the release procedure. Present were MACC deputy public prosecutor Rustam Anip and Manzur’s counsel, Ariel Christopher Dasan, who stood in for counsel P.J. Pereira.

Rustam said the magistrate had set a RM30,000 bail with two sureties.

“Manzur has to report once a month to the MACC office here,” said Rustam.

He was the eighth individual released to date. Another younger brother of Shafie, Lahad Datu assemblyman Datuk Yusof Apdal, will remain in MACC custody until tomorrow.
