40 volunteers needed for Sudan, Lebanon

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The fifth MyCorps mission under the Youth and Sports Ministry will undertake volunteer projects in Sudan and Lebanon at the end of the year.

Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said 40 youths would be selected for the mission and applications opened yesterday.

“We invite youth with communication, construction, photography and education skills, as well as those keen on volunteering, to apply to be a part of the mission.

“The mission will run from Dec 24 to March 3,” he said at the MyCorps@South Asia Ignition Ceremony here yesterday.

The fourth edition of the mission — MyCorps@South Asia — was in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka from Aug 20 to Oct 18. The 40 volunteers were university graduates and youth from non-governmental organisations.

Khairy said the programme was not only beneficial to people in need in various parts of the world, but also to the volunteers.

Seeing the hardship experienced by the volunteers and their willingness to make sacrifices in voluntary work, Khairy said he was confident that the future of the country was in good hands.

“Previous missions have been successful, but MyCorps@South Asia has been the mission with the most number of projects.”

He praised the mission for collecting more than RM120,000 in donations from Malaysians for the cause.

“I hope that one day, MyCorps will be as big as the United States Peace Corps.”

Khairy hoped that the ministry would be given enough allocation in the 2018 Budget to expand the programme.

He said he was aiming to organise two to four MyCorps missions next year.
