THE Foreign Ministry confirmed that Ramli Abdul Majid’s body was found by the Iranian Mountaineering Federation at Mount Damavand, Iran, on Friday.

Ramli, 44, went missing after he was separated from other climbers while ascending the mountain on Nov 20 last year.

Wisma Putra said the Malaysian embassy in Teheran would assist to bring Ramli’s body back to Malaysia.

It said the government expressed its gratitude to the Iranian authorities for their efforts to find him.

“The government conveys its sincere condolences to his family,” Wisma Putra said yesterday.

Ramli, a systems chief engineer at the Proton Holdings headquarters in Shah Alam, and another climber from Alpine Tour Club (KJA), Syed Redzuan Syed Salim Shatri, 50, were separated from other climbers while scaling Mount Damavand.

Syed Redzuan’s body was found in the Yakhar Glacier area on Nov 28.

At over 5,600m, Mount Damavand is the highest mountain in Iran.

Ramli’s wife, Roslida Ablah, 42, said the identification of the remains would provide a closure to Ramli’s almost year-long disappearance.

“If it is true that it is my husband’s body, I would be grateful as we could give him a proper burial,” she said.

She expressed her gratitude to all the parties that had helped in locating her late husband’s remains.

KJA climber Mohd Khafiz Bachok, 39, who was also part of the expedition that scaled the mountain, said he was grateful that Ramli’s body was found.

“Although I’m saddened by his death, I’m grateful that we found his remains,” Khafiz said.

He said he had been informed that Ramli’s body was at a hospital in Amol, Mazandaran Province, and would later be transported to Teheran.
