Tribute to Hussein Onn’s legacy
KUALA LUMPUR: The memory of Malaysia’s third prime minister will live on for future generations to see and experience, following the opening of the Tun Hussein Onn Memorial here.
The memorial showcases his works, complete with an exhibition of his legacy, information and personal memorabilia.
Present at the opening yesterday included Hussein’s family members, who witnessed the handover of the memorial by UEM Edgenta Bhd to the National Archives.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein expressed his gratitude to those involved in making his father’s life story into a reality.
Hishammuddin said he felt melancholic and bittersweet to see his father’s achievements being immortalised.
“The most important thing to my family are the life principles that are still relevant when Tun Hussein was governing Malaysia.
“Responsibility has to be in line with integrity, honesty and dedication to carry out one’s duties,” he said, adding that his father’s focus was unity among Malaysians.
He said Hussein had grasped those principles to maintain integration among the people in all of the positions he held throughout his service to the country and people.
National Archives directorgeneral Datuk Azemi Abdul Aziz said the new building had been certified as a Green Building Index and was the first-ever green building for them.
The 60,500sq ft building was built in two years at a cost of RM39 million.
