Duo pulls off RM1.1m gems heist
PETALING JAYA: Two men pulled off a brazen heist, fleeing with about RM1.1 million worth of jewellery from a goldsmith shop in Giant Kota Damansara yesterday.
The duo swiped seven trays of jewellery and escaped in a car, all in less than five minutes. The masked men, armed with parang, barged into the shop at 10.30am.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said police were alerted at 10.51am.
“Initial investigation shows that four workers, including the security guard, were opening the premises when the men barged in. One of them brandished a parang at the security guard and took away his gun. The other went out to a kiosk located in front of the premises and cleaned out seven trays of jewellery from the unlocked display panel.”
He said the men escaped in a white Nissan Almera parked near the hypermarket’s entrance.
Police found the security guard’s weapon in the mall’s compound and are retrieving closedcircuit television (CCTV) footages around the vicinity.
The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
In George Town, two other men also robbed a jewellery shop and escaped with RM15,000 worth of jewellery at Lebuh Buckingham.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said the incident happened at 11.30am when two men barged into the shop.
A scuffle ensued when three workers at the shop tried to stop the duo from escaping. One worker was punched.
“The shop is not equipped with CCTV, but we will retrieve footages from nearby shops to identify the suspects.
“The shop’s estimated loss is about RM15,000,” Anuar said.
The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery.
