ANIS Shazlin Zulkhisham and Megat Zaqrul Haiqal Megat Zairudin completed a hat-trick each in the women’s open and Milo boys’ Under-16 respectively at the Penang Closed Championships at the Classic Bowl in Bukit Jambul.

Recovering from an injury for the past month, Anis Shazlin did not set any target for the tournament.

But she not only won the women’s Open for the third consecutive time but also finished second in the girls’ Open the day before.

The 19-year-old, who had wanted to study IT and English, has decided to put them on hold and concentrate on her first love, bowling.

When the national youth training squad beckoned her, she readily accepted the invitation and joined them early this year.

But sadly after a short stint with the squad, she suffered the injury.

“For more than a month I was not training and I have just returned to do light training. After consulting my coach Randy Wong, I decided to participate and it paid off.”

Anis Shazlin said her success in the Penang Closed vindicated her decision to postpone her studies.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Megat Zaqrul Haiqal not only won the boys’ Under-16 title three years in a row but he also clinched the coveted men’s Open for the first time after overcoming more senior and experienced bowlers.

However, the SMK Taman Inderawasih Form Two student suffered one disappointment though — he finished seventh in the boys’ Open.

The lanky soft spoken youth said the success has motivated him to work harder to win a place in the Penang team for the Perak Malaysia Games.
