Fattah’s far from ‘kayu’ label

Popular actor Fattah Amin shows his newly honed acting skills in Astro First’s new telemovie Wanita Terindah, writes Bibi Nurshuhada Ramli

HE was once described as “kayu” (wooden) for his stiff and monotonous acting in Astro Ria’s hit series (2015). But actor Fattah Amin has come a long way since then and shown much progress in his latest endeavour, namely Astro First’s telemovie

That’s what his leading lady, Nur Fazura says after a screening of the production.

”Actually I paid her big money to say that,” Fattah jokes, grinning at the actress seated next to him.

“In all seriousness, I never expected this outcome but I know it’s the result of a lot of help that I got from my co-stars and (the director) Joon Goh. The process of establishing that chemistry and understanding Joon’s overall vision for the telemovie was key in coming up with a beautiful production.

“I’m beyond glad that people think my acting has improved but my quest to become even better doesn’t stop here,” says Fattah, 27.

A NEW ROLE FOR FATTAH

was produced by Red Films and FastyleAsia, and written by Rafidah Abdullah. The story idea is based on Ezza Mysara’s novel which was inspired by Fattah’s debut single

Shot in 10 days, it also stars Sarah Hildebrand, Ridzuan Hashim and Miss Universe Malaysia 2017 Samantha Katie James.

Fattah plays Fahim, a temperamental photographer who thinks there should be only one woman in his life: His charitable mother Zahra (Liza Othman).

A scene from Wanita Terindah.

His life changes when Zahra, out of the blue, takes in Fikri (Nik Adam Mika), a small boy suffering from leukaemia, making him feel replaced.

“Since Fahim is so complex, I did extra research. The challenge was to maintain his level of temper in every take,” says Fattah. “Those familiar with my work will know that I’ve never portrayed this type of character before. And it’s always been my plan anyway to present something different every time.

“I can assure you that you won’t see Fahim in the characters that I play in (my upcoming drama series) and (upcoming film)

Fazura, 34, comments with a laugh: “On set, I was blown away by the anger that he portrayed because it looked legit! At the same time, I felt so proud to see his improvement. It’s all about whether or not you’re willing to make an effort.

“And I see that Fattah is always working hard and takes criticism well, which are two great qualities in an actor.”

NOT MUCH FATTZURA

Fazura plays Nuryn, a reporter and Fahim’s colleague who changes his perception in life and animosity towards Fikri. She and Fattah had garnered quite a lot of support ever since they were paired up in Astro Ria’s series

Fans of “FattZura” may expect to see romance between their characters in

However, they better not get their hopes up because this telemovie is more of a family drama that dives into the intricate relationship between Fahim and Fikri.

Fattah and Fazura are paired up in the movie but the focus is not on their relationship.

Rafidah says: “We minimised the loveydovey scenes to highlight the family drama element more, as the latter is the key ingredient to the whole plot.

“Essentially, is a more mature story that resonates well with the audience thanks to its relatable storyline.”

Executive producer Lina Tan says: “That’s why we decided to release it on TV so that it’s accessible to more households. It’s a telemovie that can be enjoyed by the whole family.”

Fazura says she sees this as a good thing “because a TV or film production doesn’t necessarily need to have romance. An actor should be able to explore a myriad of genres and step out of their comfort zone. At the same time, viewers won’t get bored this way when they see a variation,” she says.

She acknowledges the fact that FattZura became a hot topic thanks to the romance in but she stresses that she and Fattah can’t be playing onscreen lovers forever.

“Again, viewers might get bored of seeing the two of us sparring together all the time. We not only need to diversify our roles, but also the cast members we work with.”

Fazura believes that their respective fans will still understand and support Wanita Terindah is a family drama that delves into the intricate relationship between Fahim and Fikri.

whatever endeavours she and Fattah take on next.

“Perhaps in the future, Fattah and I will be paired up with different co-stars for a change. Maybe there is a chance for us to work together again, but for now up to mid next year, there are no plans yet.”
