Gerakan urges Chinese community to ‘wake up’, reject DAP

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chinese community must “wake up” and return to the “right path” by rejecting DAP and the opposition in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14), Gerakan Wanita chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said.

She said the community would continue to suffer should they keep rejecting Barisan Nasional candidates and allow themselves to be taken for a ride by DAP, which she described as the opposition pact’s “running dog”.

“Running dog” is a derogatory term to describe lackeys, which DAP had flung against Barisan Nasional’s component parties.

“It is time for the Chinese community to be more aware, to wake up and return to the right path. DAP is the real running dog, for the party has betrayed the Chinese community. It made all kinds of promises and caused the community to lose out by not having representatives in the Federal Government.

“The people should not be taken in by their sweet promises which are never fulfilled. You have been lied to and made a fool of for two terms,” she said in her speech at Gerakan’s 46th National Delegates Conference at Menara PGRM here yesterday.

She warned that the opposition pact members tended to bicker among each other, which could destabilise the economy and subsequently the people’s livelihoods.

At the same time, she expressed confidence that BN’s component parties would close ranks instead of being at loggerheads with each other, even when it came to seat allocations.

“Only winnable candidates, with high integrity, who are accepted by the people will be fielded,” Tan said.

Gerakan deputy president Datuk Dr Cheah Soon Hai said the two-party system of governance, as promoted by the opposition, would not contribute towards national unity.

Dr Cheah said due to “underhanded political manoeuvres”, adoption of the system would result in racial polarisation.

“The system has a very significant imbalance to it, with the opposition being backed mostly by Chinese voters. On the other hand, BN is supported mainly by the Malays and Bumiputera voters, as was evident in the 2013 General Election.

“Such political polarisation takes place because of unscrupulous and underhanded political manoeuvres.

“This will be challenging for the nation’s unity, as political support should transcend racial lines.”

He said the country’s development and progress required the contribution, cooperation and involvement of communities.

“Everyone faces the same challenges and issues, such as the rising cost of living, low wages and expensive home prices. All must be adequately represented in the government so that their voices and opinions can be heard and addressed.”
