POLICE have recorded a statement from the senior citizen who drove his car against the flow of traffic along the East Coast Highway near Gambang on Thursday.

The 81-year-old, who was travelling alone in the heavy rain, was seen driving his Proton Savvy on the wrong side of the dual-carriage highway at Km234 near the Kuantan Toll Plaza at 4.45pm.

Motorists who almost crashed into the car, which was travelling on the high-speed lane, alerted the highway authorities before a police patrol vehicle stopped the man.

State Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said police had recorded the driver’s statement. The man, from Sungai Lembing, was later released.

“We have questioned him over his actions, and he has been told to be present in court on Nov 27. We are still looking into the case.”

He said the case was being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

If found guilty, the driver could face a jail term of not more than five years, or a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000.

On Friday, a video of a car going against traffic on the East Coast Highway went viral, having been recorded by the dashboard camera of a car that almost crashed into the oncoming vehicle.
