PANGKOR Island Festival, a community based event that celebrates the diversity of art, culture, music and food, is back from Nov 25-Dec 2.

Held for the fourth consecutive year by the Oriental Art and Cultural Center (OACC) incollaboration with the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), this year’s edition will showcase the theme of Art and Seek Carnival is Kinship: Creating Bonds and Embracing Nature.

The organisers have invited international folklore artists from Indonesia and the Philippines to perform alongside veterans from Malaysia. World class visual artists from Japan, Taiwan and France will also be displaying their unique installations at the festival to be held at SJK (C) Hwa Lian at Jalan Pasir Bogak.

Other highlights include various performances, art and food bazaars, workshops, talks, film screening, exhibitions, and heritage and environmental conservation.

Sponsored by Elken Foundation and officially endorsed by the Manjung City Council (MPM) and Visit Perak Year 2017, the festival is aimed at improving the wellbeing of the community and helping the underprivileged through corporate social responsibility programmes by the OACC.

It also aims to create greater awareness on preserving the rich Asian culture while providing opportunities to the locals to present their talents and wares to visitors.

Pangkor Island Festival will enrich the lives of the community by making arts and culture accessible, bridge art with education, provide opportunities for locals to unite for a greater cause and instil the importance of cultural preservation in the younger generation, especially those who leave the island to work on the mainland.

CIOFF Malaysia president Datuk Hassim Salim said this year’s collaboration with CIOFF has given the festival an added dimension. “The participation of international groups will help bridge cultural knowledge and provide a wider repertoire of arts and culture exposure that the audience can learn to appreciate.”

Not only that, Pangkor Island Festival 2017 will also create history as it marks the first time an island in Malaysia will have its very own typeface. The fonts are inspired by various elements that make up Pangkor Island and uses illustration as a gateway to showcase its unique identity.

Designer Lai Sin Yee transforms the weather and landscape of Pangkor into a colourful octagon-shaped typeface. The hornbill, anchovies, traditional house, lighthouse, ships, snorkelling gear and palm trees make up the word “Pangkor” while other significant landmarks such as the floating mosque, Dutch fort, ancient well, temple and nature elements such as

crabs and corals make up the rest of the alphabet typeface.

Visitors to the Pangkor Island Festival can look forward to various performances from folklore groups under CIOFF, installation exhibits from international visual artists and a myriad of workshops, screenings, bazaars and hands-on activities in the Art and Seek section of the venue.

As part of its environmentally-friendly initiative, Pangkor Island Festival is also working with O Bike to sponsor 50 bicycles for the festival to encourage cycling rather than driving around the island.
