Showcase of wind orchestras
The DFP is hosting a showcase by winners of a youth wind orchestra festival, writes Dennis Chua
THE Dewan Filharmonik Petronas celebrates the establishment of symphonic wind orchestras in Malaysia in a special concert at 8.30pm today. A collaboration project with the Ministry of Education, DFP acts as a platform for budding young musicians to showcase their talents in an international and prestigious stage.
Before this, 13 wind orchestras competed in the annual Festival Wind Orchestra Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Ke-19 Peringkat Kebangsaan (19th National Level Boarding Schools Wind Orchestra Festival) on Nov 7 at the Senawang Exhibition & Convention Centre, Seremban, Negri Sembilan.
The judges included Ahmad Muriz Che Rose (Head of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra), and musicians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra; principal percussionist Matthew Prendergast and principal oboist Simon Emes.
The competition was held for the first time at Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor Baru in 1997, where 18 boarding schools participated. It was launched by the then Minister of Education, Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Its objectives are to nurture music quality among youths, elevate their standard and inculcate good teamwork.
For the first time in the history of the competition, the winners will get to perform on the DFP stage this year.
The participating orchestras are Sekolah Menengah Sains Machang (Kelantan), Sekolah Datuk Abdul Razak (Negri Sembilan), Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor, Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (Terengganu), Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching (Sarawak) and Sekolah Seri Puteri (Selangor).

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra will present classical gems under the baton of Paul Dyer at 8.30pm tomorrow and 3pm on Sunday at the DFP.

Dyer, who has collaborated with the MPO several times before, was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2013 for his immense contribution to orchestral
Dyer music. Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, he is one of Australia’s leading specialists in period performance styles.
Dyer has appeared with many major ensembles all over Australia and around the world as well. He has performed with many international soloists including Andreas Scholl, Cyndia Sieden, Christoph Pregardien, Hidemi Suzuki, Manfredo Kraemer, Andrew Manze, Yvonne Kenny and Emma Kirkby.
