Dragons’ Marshall sets ABL record

-

MARCUS Marshall scored 60 points to set a new Asean Basketball League individual scoring record in leading the Malaysia Dragons to a double-overtime 116-112 win over Mono Vampire in Bangkok yesterday.

American guard Marshall added 22 points in overtime to the 38 he scored in regulation as the Dragons began the new season on a high despite having to play with one import less following the departure of Solomon Jones by mutual consent.

Marshall, making his Dragons debut, scored from 21 of 40 attempts as well as going 13-for14 from the free-throw line while pulling down nine rebounds.

He scored 12 points in three of the four quarters in regulation as well as the first overtime period before adding 10 points in second overtime.

Ivan Yeo scored eight of his 14 points in the final five minutes to help the Dragons overcome Thai club Mono Vampire after squandering a five-point lead in the first overtime period when Paul Zamar tied it at 95-95 with a late three-pointer.

Marshall had chance to wrap up the win in regulation time but allowed too much time to pass before hurriedly making a threepoint effort which bounced off the board to leave the score level at 80-80.

Reggie Johnson, who starred for the Dragons when they won the ABL title in 2016, led Mono Vampire with 35 points and 16 rebounds while Patrick Sanders had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the hosts.

The Dragons play their first home game of the season on Wednesday when they host China's Chong Son Kung Fu at the Maba Stadium.
