Najib: Melaka enjoying booming development

-

MELAKA: The historical city of Melaka has come a long way from a “sleepy hollow” to become one of the world’s 100 most resilient cities.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this was evident from the booming development taking place in the state.

“Melaka has changed so much that on weekends, it experiences traffic congestion. When I was on board the electric bus from my hotel, I could see not only the Melaka Gateway development project, but also the Melaka Impression.

“I also saw new retail outlets bustling with business activities,” he said before officiating the Gen Y Green The City event in Klebang here yesterday.

To complement the rising growth of the state, Najib said the government had approved the construction of elevated exchanges.

“I have approved (the construction of) two elevated exchanges requested by Chief Minister (Datuk Seri Idris Haron) at the city centre. The RM350 million project is expected to be completed by next year,” he said.

He also commended the wellmaintained Melaka River Cruise, which was the brainchild of former Melaka chief minister Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam.

Najib said the High-Speed Rail (HSR) linking Malaysia to Singapore was planned for the future generation and was slated for completion in 2022.

“Can you imagine arriving in Melaka from Singapore in just an hour? There will be a change of lifestyle in Melaka and the prices of land will increase due to demand from outsiders,” he said.

He lauded Melaka for being one of the world’s 100 resilient cities as endorsed by the Rockefeller Foundation.
