SMALL Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia Bhd (SME Bank) has donated RM52,220 to the Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

SME Bank chairman Tan Sri Faizah Mohd Tahir said RM30,000 would be channelled into Tabung Bencana NSTP-Media Prima and RM22,220 into the Tabung Kemanusiaaan Rohingya Media Prima.

“We are committed to assisting the public as we see it as part of our responsibility to provide aid to those in need,” she said, adding that SME Bank had taken part in humanitarian relief efforts in the past.

“A sum of the donations was collected from our bank officers and the rest are corporate donations,” she said during the mock cheque presentation at Balai Berita in Bangsar here on Thursday.

Faizah said the funds for Tabung Bencana NSTP-Media Prima would ease the burden of flood victims in Kelantan and Terengganu.

She said SME Bank did not have a mechanism to send aid directly to the needy, especially Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

“This is why we decided to contribute to the NSTP-Media Prima Humanitarian Fund so that they can help us channel these donations directly.

“We also see this donation as our response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call to highlight the plight of Rohingya Muslim minority on the international stage.”

Faizah presented a mock cheque to New Straits Times Press chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Jalil Hamid.

Present were SME Bank group strategic management director Khairil Anuar Mohammad Anuar, Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund board of trustee member Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong and NST group editor Datuk Yushaimi Yahaya.
