Hamilton prefers rivals to be stronger
WORLD champion Lewis Hamilton hopes the big disparity in performance among the F1 teams is reduced to make the race more exciting.
The Mercedes AMG Petronas driver admitted that there is currently a huge gap between the F1 teams.
He is, however, not optimistic of seeing any changes to the situation in the near future.
“As I have said before, no rules are going to change no matter what I say, so I would just be speculating,” said Hamilton early this week in Kuala Lumpur.
“But ultimately overtaking is what we want more of, we want more teams to be involved in the championship (battle).
“At the moment you have Ferrari and Mercedes up there and then Force India and Williams down there and then there are the ones at the back.
“They are just not quick enough.
“Maybe not having such a spread (between teams) and having cars closing up (the gap) would be good but that is not going to change next year.
“That is something that Fomula One needs to change for the future.”
Hamilton added that there are a number of young drivers he believes have the potential to become world champions.
“There are a few, you have Esteban Ocon, Max Verstappen and Stoffel Vandoorne... they have shown the most promise.”
Hamilton will remain with Mercedes next year and is eying a fifth world title.
His teammate will be Valtteri Bottas, who came in third in the championship this season. Fadhli Ishak
