‘Speed up Kelantan’s flood-mitigation projects’

-

RANTAU PANJANG: Kelantan Umno yesterday called on the Federal Government to speed up the implementation of floodmitigation projects in the state to prevent floods from recurring.

Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said this was to ease the burden of the people, who had to face floods every year.

“The Federal Government already has plans for projects to mitigate floods in the state.

“Kelantan Umno proposes for the Federal Government to carry out the projects immediately as we do not want locals to face the same problem every year.

“They have been waiting for the projects for a long time and we hope the Federal Government will consider this,” he said after visiting flood victims at SK Gual Tinggi yesterday.

Mustapa, who is also international trade and industry minister, said clogged drains had been identified as the main contributor to the floods.

“We will find solutions to the problem,” Mustapa said.

He said the state Umno would focus on giving assistance to flood victims.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has agreed to give additional assistance to the victims.”

Mustapa said he had asked the state Welfare Department to compile a list of names of victims to facilitate aid distribution.

During the visit, he handed out food baskets to 1,148 evacuees from 548 families.
