EX-MB to help BN win back Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Selangor menteri besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced that he would help Umno and Barisan Nasional to wrest Selangor back in the 14th General Election.
The Port Klang assemblyman and Bandar Tun Razak member of parliament, who was partyless following his sacking from PKR in 2014, said he would help Umno as an independent.
“I’m ready to help Umno and BN in Selangor and others if it is for the good and prosperity of the people and state,” he said after attending the Selangor Umno Convention at Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.
The convention was opened by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Khalid said he would lend his experience and use his influence to win support for BN and Umno, and hoped that this would benefit the people.
“I believe that by working independently, people will not have to worry about my goal (in politics). My intention is to contribute to the success of the people in Selangor.
“I do not represent any party. I represent the people of Selangor.”
Khalid said people today were smarter and would choose a candidate, instead of a party, that they believed would lead the state well.
The two-term MP and state assemblyman said he had no intention of contesting the next general election, and preferred to work independently.
Zahid said Umno hoped to win back Selangor with the support of four of its former menteris besar — Khalid, Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib, Tan Sri Abu Hassan Omar and Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo.
Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said there was a need to improve compatibility among state party members and to strengthen its machinery to win the hearts and minds of the people.
“This (fight) will be an uphill battle for us, and we have to work harder and smart in order to realise it,” he said.
Zahid said Umno needed to come up with a more powerful approach and strategy in order to gain success to win back the support of Selangor’s people.
