Decision on Kg Sungai Yu case on Wednesday

-

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) will decide this Wednesday whether there are grounds for an investigation and public hearing into alleged land misappropriation in Kampung Sungai Yu in Kuala Selangor.

Permatang assemblyman Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Razak, a Selcat member, said the committee decided to discuss the matter again following their first meeting earlier last week, chaired by Speaker Hannah Yeoh.

Sulaiman said Selcat committee members could not reach a consensus on whether the Kampung Sungai Yu case should be probed.

“Next Wednesday, the committee will decide if Selcat should pursue the case or have another select committee probe it, or even decide if there is a case in the first place.

“We are at the factfinding stage, after letters requesting indepth answers were sent to the parties involved in the awarding of the Kampung Sungai Yu land, such as the Kuala Selangor land and district offices, as well as executive councillor Ganabatirau Veraman.

“In a meeting held earlier this week, I tabled and argued this issue, in which the land earmarked for the Indian community was supposed to be awarded only to the original residents of Kampung Sungai Yu, but was instead given to outsiders.

“This is worrying as this is happening in my constituency and constituents are deprived of their rights.

“To me, the residents’ concerns that land was given to a family and outsiders from other states are fact, and not mere allegations,” Sulaiman told the New Sunday Times yesterday.

Sulaiman said in the meeting, Yeoh had said the answers given by the executive councillor during the recent Selangor State Legislative Assembly were not convincing.

“She also said a lot of questions raised by me were unanswered by the executive councillor.”

Yeoh said a decision on the matter would be made in the meeting on Wednesday.

“It will be made when the documents come in from the agencies, including the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the state government,” she told the New Sunday Times.
