Maxwell alumni raise RM14,000 for sports equipment
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 500 Old Boys of SMK Maxwell reminisced about their school days as they attended the institution’s 100th year anniversary dinner at Sunway Putra Hotel here yesterday.
The dinner, hosted by the school’s alumni (Persatuan Bekas Penuntut Sekolah Maxwell), raised RM14,000 to buy sports equipment for the school.
The association’s vice-president, Datuk Badruddin Abu Bakar, said the school had produced decorated sportsmen in the past. As such, he said, the younger generation needed support to carry the torch.
He said Sea Games gold medallist Tan Fu Jie (gymnast) was a recent student.
“Paralympian Mohd Khairul Ishak, who won a bronze in the 2017 Sea Games, also came from our school.
“While Theeban Govindasamy, who won two silver medals for karate (team and individual) in the 2013 Sea Games, graduated some 10 years ago.
“The association presented RM1,000 to Ain Zulaikha Saipul, who is pursuing her Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia, for academic excellence.
The award was given in honour of its founder, Sir William George Maxwell.
The school was once famous as a training ground to prepare students to become national representatives in the sporting arena.
The all-boys school has produced Maxwellians, as they called themselves, who stamped their mark in Malaysia’s sporting events, particularly football and hockey.
