IN the recently released 2018 Best Global Universities Ranking by U.S. News & World Report, University of Malaya (UM) was ranked at 10th position among 600 global universities as the world’s best universities for engineering.

The ranking looked into universities that have shown strength in producing research related to a variety of engineering topics. They include aerospace, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering.

In a statement issued by UM, the university said its placement in this ranking shows that the research & development (R&D) at the university and the Engineering Faculty specifically, are of high quality and is highly referred globally.

UM Engineering Faculty acting dean Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman said: “This accomplishment shows that Malaysian researchers and universities can stand tall with the rest of the world.”

He said this is also a clear and direct result of the High Impact Research (HIR) grant that was awarded to UM in 2011-2016, where highimpact R&D projects worth RM116 million were carried out under the faculty alone.

“The resources invested through monetary support via research funding from the government is an important factor in this outstanding accomplishment. This is also made possible for the quality of students with the help and support of the faculty staff.

“I believe that we can sustain this success and even improve with continuous support as mentioned. We have also received support not only from the ministry but also companies and public in general,” said Abdul Aziz.

The research outcomes of the HIR projects also benefited many local communities and industries, as well as commercialisation of various research products.

The faculty is looking forward to continue to work with the government, industries and companies, professional bodies, students and the general public in achieving more meaningful and impactful ventures for the progress of the nation.

“Companies including SMEs are most welcome to invest in joint research projects, for the improvement or creation of new products.

“We are also inviting students interested to do their PhD or Master study to consider UM, in view of the cutting-edge research conducted here which will undoubtedly make them technological experts and future leaders of the industries,” he said.
