Take action against those responsible for forex losses, says Youth leader

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Immediate action must be taken against those behind the RM31.5 billion Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) foreign exchange (forex) losses between 1992 and 1994.

Baling Umno Youth chief Mohamed Noor Mohamed Amin said no one was above the law, not even former leaders.

“The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the forex scandal was damning, and action should be taken against those responsible.

“The authorities must be swift in pressing charges against wrongdoers,” Noor said in his debate at the Umno Youth meeting at the party’s general assembly here yesterday.

The RCI report stated, among other things, that the then finance minister had “deliberately concealed facts and information, and made misleading statements to the cabinet”.

The finance minister at the time was Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while the prime minister was Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Noor also called upon the authorities to launch an investigation into the source of wealth amassed by Dr Mahathir and his family.

He called for at least 60 Umno Youth delegates to be chosen as candidates in the 14th General Election (GE14).

He also proposed that Umno Youth vice-chief Senator Khairul Azwan Harun be appointed a deputy minister should the party perform well in GE14.

Kuala Langat Umno Youth chief Jefrizal Mohd Jaafar lashed out at the PKR-led Selangor government, saying it was in disarray.

In his debate, Jefrizal said the state government and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali were DAP’s puppets.

“Now that DAP is controlling the state government, the prices of houses have gone up, profiting capitalists. What’s going to happen to the people of Selangor?”

Penang Umno Youth spokesman Norhiesam Ismail said the DAP-led Penang government had failed in managing floods as Penang was hit by the disaster 20 times this year.

He said all quarters, especially the opposition, must accept the fact that the floods were caused by overdevelopment.
