PM to meet OIC leaders to discuss Muslim nations’ rejection of Jerusalem move

-

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will meet Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries’ leaders to discuss Muslim nations’ rejection of the move by the United States to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

To cheers of support from Umno delegates, especially those from Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings, Najib said Malaysia could not accept the pressure placed on its Muslim brothers in whatever situation.

“How can we accept the humiliation of one of the three holiest sites for Islam? We will fight until the end,” he said in his closing remarks at the 71st Umno General Assembly yesterday.

Najib cancelled a meeting with his Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, to attend the OIC special meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, in Istanbul on the invitation of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Mr Erdogan said Malaysia’s voice is important. I had to cancel a consultative meeting with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

“I have informed him (Lee) that the OIC meeting is about a matter that affects my faith as a Muslim and the faith of all Muslims.”

Later at a press conference, Najib said Malaysia-United States ties were multi-dimensional, but Malaysia would not budge from its stand against the decision to declare Jerusalem the Israeli capital.

“We can work with (the US) on other aspects, but in this matter (Jerusalem), we will stick to our principle. It is something unacceptable and against the rule of sovereignty (in the region) as decided by the United Nations Security Council.

“The issue will lead to difficulties in holding discussions on a two-state solution.

“Severe tensions will mount and blood may spill.

“I know even Christians are not at ease with the development.

“European countries and nonMuslim countries have similar sentiments.”

He said the US ambassador to Malaysia would be officially informed by Wisma Putra about Malaysia’s stand.

He said there would be no military measures for now.

“We are using diplomacy and negotiation.”

Najib commended Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for organising a successful rally uniting Malaysians from all walks of life and across political divides to protest against the US’ decision.

Protesters gathered outside the Tabung Haji building here after Friday prayers before heading to the US embassy.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia would continue to speak up on behalf of the people of Palestine.

He said Najib would carry the voice of Umno in fighting for the Palestinian cause.

“We have been consistent in fighting for the rights of Palestinians, similar to our stand on the

atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar.”

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital was a “huge slap” to the Muslim world.

“The armed forces is standing by for any eventuality on the Jerusalem controversy.”

Puteri chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the move by US President Donald Trump was like firing a missile to the holy city.

“Let us pressure Trump to revoke his action before a huge conflict is set off.”
