SOME 50 volunteers from The New Straits Times Press conducted a gotong-royong in conjunction with the Titipan Kasih Harian Metro (TKHM) special backto-school programme at the Pusat Tahfiz Darul ‘Ulum Al-Islamiyyah Al-Banuriyyah school in Kampung Pertama here on Friday.

Harian Metro (HM) features executive editor Othman Mamat, who was the organising chairman for the programme, said GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Giant) also took part in the programme with NSTP volunteers.

The school was inundated in the floods that struck the state early last month.

Giant handed out aid to the school’s management body.

“We hope that cleaning up the school and handing over a fridge, rice, cooking oil and other basic necessities will ease their burden,” Othman said after attending the gotong-royong.

He said the organiser also sponsored 200 students from SK Permatang Pasir and SMK Permatang Pasir for items at Giant as part of its TKHM programme.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd sponsored the vehicles for the volunteers to use throughout the two-day event.

Present were Giant corporate communications and relations senior manager Mohd Shahrizal Ayub and Penang HM bureau chief Saipul Adli Mohamad.

TKHM is a corporate social responsibility programme by HM to provide assistance to the Seberang Perai Tengah community.
