Lee receives 6th honorary doctorate
KUALA LUMPUR: Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Asia Metropolitan University (AMU) in recognition of his contributions to the community through his social work.
Lee, who the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman, received the Honorary Doctorate in Social Work from AMU Chancellor General (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin at the university’s 11th convocation recently. This was Lee’s sixth honorary doctorate.
In his speech, Lee advised graduates to embrace the core values of excellence, discipline, integrity, mutual respect, confidence, openness in communication and humility.
“Put them into practice irrespective of what profession you are in. Challenging times are transient, but values stand the test of time,” he said.
He also said academic excellence was only part of their achievement, adding that they must also improve their interpersonal and problem-solving skills in other areas.
“In the face of globalisation, our country’s future and prosperity depends not just on intellectual minds, but also the creativity to handle tasks and problems.”
He said graduates must be flexible, adaptable, able to communicate and be cooperative, apart from being a creative thinker, researcher and life-long student.
“Such skills are crucial in today’s working environment to ensure our country competes in this borderless world.”
