2 cops charged over armed robbery

KUANTAN: Two police constables and a labourer were charged at the magistrate’s court yesterday over their alleged involvemen­t in the shooting of a grocery shop owner during a robbery here last month.

Muhammad Amin Pauzi, Muhammad Shafiq Sa’ari, and Muhammad Nur Subhi Mohd Rakhzam, both aged 25, were calm when the charges were read to them before magistrate Nordiana Abd Aziz.

Amin and Shafiq were charged with being accomplice­s of Subhi, who allegedly shot Leong Tien Fook, 55, in the neck during a robbery at the victim’s house at DU-50, Batu 9 here at 5.30am on Nov 25.

Within hours of the incident, Amin and Shafiq — attached to the Pahang contingent police headquarte­rs and Kuantan district police headquarte­rs respective­ly — were detained.

Subhi, who resided at Kampung Baru Permatang Badak here, was picked up on the same day.

Amin, from Kampung Che Wal, Machang, Kelantan, was part of the communicat­ions unit, while Shafiq, from Kampung Banggol Che Dol, Pasir Mas, Kelantan, was with the traffic unit.

Amin and Shafiq were charged with being accomplice­s of Subhi in dischargin­g a firearm against the victim, under Section 3A of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

The two policemen were alleged to have been at the scene of the crime and knew that Subhi would discharge the firearm in order to hurt or kill Leong.

Subhi was charged under Section 3 of the same Act for purportedl­y firing at the victim in order to injure or kill him during the robbery.

Offences under both sections carry the death penalty upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Shahrizzat Amadan applied for bail to be denied to the accused, who were unrepresen­ted.

Nordiana fixed Jan 16 for mention.
