‘Anwar’s victim needs justice too’
KUANTAN: United States-based human rights lawyer Kimberly Motley should consider how justice must be served to the victim of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s crime before urging for the former opposition leader’s release from jail.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said that Motley’s focus on Anwar being a political prisoner was a narrow perspective.
“How about the feel- ings of the victim who had been sodomised if Anwar is freed on the mere basis that the latter is a political prisoner?
“It is certain that this decision (to release Anwar) would be unjust.
“Why must we have faith in foreigners when Malaysia has stood strong and been recognised by nearly all worldwide since independence?” the Kuala Selangor member of parliament said in response to Motley’s bid to have Anwar released early.
He was referring to the 2015 Federal Court verdict which upheld Anwar conviction and five years’ jail for sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Irmohizam reminded her that she must understand and respect Malaysia’s laws even in her pursuit of justice and international relations.
“It is clear that Motley’s perspective is only focused on the issue of fundamental rights even though Malaysia’s legal system is transparent and clear.
“The question is whether Motley is the official legal representative appointed by Anwar or his family,” Irmohizam said.
Recently she had come under fire for allegedly disputing the country’s leaders and its legal system.
Her controversial statements followed on the heels of her failure to meet Anwar in prison.
