Umno wing leaders relieved over cancellation
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno wings lauded the immediate repeal of the Integrated Manasik Monitoring System (Imams), following public uproar on its implementation, which could inadvertently lead to exploitation of pilgrims.
Three wing leaders expressed relief over the cancellation, after receiving negative feedback on the system.
Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said her wing had assisted in relaying the people’s views to the authorities.
She thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for his concerns and prompt action to resolve the controversy.
“Wanita Umno will continue to be the eyes and ears at the grassroots level, to assist the government in making the best decision for the people’s wellbeing.”
Umno Youth executive council member Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin said Imams would have burdened pilgrims if it was not repealed.
He said pilgrims would have had to pay the Goods and Services Tax, at about RM5.10, in addition to RM45 for using the system and RM40 for insurance.
He said Tabung Haji should be responsible for addressing fraud in pilgrim packages, instead of a “non-Muslim” firm appointed to set up and run Imams.
“It is true that, over the years, we have heard about pilgrims becoming victims of scams.
“We understand that the decision to implement such a system is to address the growing number of scams. But, that is not the best method to do so.
“How much profit goes to the company (that runs Imams)?” Nazir said.
Puteri Umno information chief Haryaty Hamdzah said Friday’s announcement by the Tourism and Culture Ministry on Imams’ implementation had led to confusion and worry among people.
She said it was unbecoming for anyone to make a quick buck out of the predicament caused by scams.
“Problems (of fraudulent packages) are caused by unethical and irresponsible agencies.
“Such matters should be resolved through law enforcement, (holding) public awareness drives and bolstering integrity in management without incurring additional costs.
“It is not right to turn it into an opportunity to gain profit by imposing additional fees on pilgrims.”
