Raenuga Indran says Sunway’s College FIST programme nurtures individuals who will have soft and hard skills.

THE Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST) programme at Sunway College is recommended for students who are searching for their area of interest. Raenuga Indran, 19, said the home-grown programme included science and technology, which were important in today’s world.

She the programme was structured to nurture individuals who would have soft and hard skills.

She found the integration of coursework as well as examination in determining her performance enjoyable, especially field trips and exhibitions.

“The methods used during assessments boosted my skills and provided me with new computer skills. The structure of the programme helped in my professional and personal development.”

Raenuga, as a Sunway student ambassador, volunteered with school visits and open days.

She participated in extra-curricular activities with the Sunway Student Volunteers Club, such as volunteering at charity runs, fundraisers and helping out at animal shelters. “Each experience has allowed me to make a difference,” said the former student of Methodist Girls’ School, Kuala Lumpur.

She was given the opportunity to be a committee member and a teaching assistant for the Asia Leadership Conference, organised by the Centre for Asia Leadership at Sunway University.

This year, she was a committee member for the mass street clean up around Sunway City, an initiative where Sunway Student Volunteers teamed up with the Great Heart Earth Warriors.

Her advice to students of the FIST programme is to master time management.

“Set your priorities right and as clichéd as it sounds, seek help from your lecturers, if you need it.”

A recipient of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation scholarship, she is pursuing her BSc (Hons) in Psychology at Sunway University.

She aspires to graduate with a Masters in Child Psychology.

For students like Raenuga, the FIST programme offers more than academic learning. Opportunities abound for those who are curious and seek to learn outside the classroom.

The FIST programme prepares students for tertiary studies in science.

It combines technical and life sciences with communication, Information and communications technology applications and enrichment subjects to formulate a curriculum designed to prepare students for the multidisciplined studies of engineering, biological sciences, life sciences, information technology and related degrees.

One of six pre-university programmes offered at Sunway College, the programme encourages enrichment in general knowledge, critical thinking skills and professional development.

The Sunway Education open day is from 10am to 4pm today.
