AN ambulance driver and a female nurse were attacked by a group of motorcyclists here after the riders were asked by the driver to make way for his vehicle. In the 1.40am incident in the NorthSouth Expressway near the Taiping Utara toll plaza on Sunday, the 53-year-old man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was transporting a patient from Parit Buntar Hospital to Taiping Hospital, along with a medical assistant and a nurse.
He said he came across a group of motorcyclists at a traffic light intersection near the toll plaza who were blocking the road.
“As they could have endangered the ambulance, I used the hailer to ask them to give way. However, they got angry and they rammed into the ambulance, before one of them fell.
“They then blocked our way with their motorcycles,” he said.
When the ambulance came to a stop, four to six teenage boys opened the ambulance door and dragged him out of the vehicle. They hit his face and other parts of his body. He received four stitches on the right brow.
“The nurse who was taking care of the patient at the back of the ambulance got out and tried to break up the fight, but she was knocked down.
“When members of the public began noticing the incident, the teenagers fled. We had to continue our journey to send the patient,” he added.
The ambulance driver lodged a report in Taiping, before returning to Parit Buntar to receive treatment.
“I remember the plate number of the motorcycle belonging to the teenager who hit me in the face, but the others did not have number plates.
“The police have identified the owner of the motorcycle, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
He added that the location of the incident was a favourite spot for illegal motorcycle racing, particularly on weekend nights.
“I always use that road, and I usually see a group of motorcyclists racing there during weekends, from around midnight until 3am in the morning,” he added.
