Tanjung Sepat murder suspect to be charged today

-

SHAH ALAM: The main suspect in the Tanjung Sepat fire that killed a family of four on Dec 13 will face charges today.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said the 38-year-old man will be charged at the Telok Datok magistrate’s court today.

“The case has been referred to the Selangor deputy public prosecutor’s office. The suspect will be charged with five counts for inflicting injury and murder.”

Fadzil said the suspect would be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

The suspect, a furniture factory worker, who has a speech and hearing impairment, admitted to committing the crime after he was arrested by a team of investigators from the Selangor police contingent Serious Crimes Division in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 15.

Earlier yesterday, Fadzil said police had enlisted the help of a sign language interpreter to question the suspect. He declined to reveal further details.

The man, who has no criminal record, was believed to have acted alone.

Investigations revealed that there was an argument at the house over financial matters, which had pushed the suspect to set the home in Jalan Tepi Laut, Tanjung Sepat on fire.

Chia Tee Nang, 73, his wife, Lim Mai Shak, 68, and their two grandchildren were killed in the incident. Police also found slash and stab wounds on three of the four victims.

The suspect, who is also the boyfriend of the elderly couple’s only daughter, was detained at a shoplot in Taman Pusat Kepong, where he lives.

He had sought medical treatment at a private clinic in the Klang Valley shortly after the incident.

A seven-day remand was obtained from the Kuala Langat court.
