Varsity student molested on LRT
KUALA LUMPUR: A university student has lodged a report claiming that she was sexually assaulted by an unidentified man on a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train at Masjid Jamek LRT Station here on Thursday.
In the 7.50pm incident, the man, believed to have been travelling alone, allegedly unzipped his pants and rubbed his exposed genitals against the victim’s buttocks.
The 20-year-old victim, who first related her traumatic experience on the Internet, said the incident took place in front of other passengers, who did nothing to help her.
She claimed that the man sexually assaulted her twice before fleeing.
“(Other passengers) did (not try) to apprehend the man or stop him. Instead, they laughed at me,” the victim wrote, expressing disgust over the incident.
She lodged a report on the same night at the Dang Wang police station.
Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaharuddin Abdullah assured the public that investigations were ongoing to track down the perpetrator.
“The victim, a polytechnic student, lodged a report on the same night, at about 10.20pm.
“Based on the report, the victim was sexually harassed twice at Masjid Jamek LRT Station about 7.50pm. The first (assault occurred) while she was on the escalator at the station and the second was on the train.”
He said in the first incident, the suspect touched the victim’s private parts and fled before the victim and her friend were able to react.
Her friend, however, managed to film the suspect as he fled from the escalator.
“Following the victim’s report, we have obtained closed-circuit television camera footage from the LRT station.
“The case will be handed over to the Federal police’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) for further action.”
Social media posts on the incident went viral after the victim and her friend lodged a report to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the operator of the train service.
