YTL GROUP DONATES RM10M

Contributi­on made in honour of late founder and chairman

THE family of the late YTL Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay has donated RM10 million to 103 charitable, educationa­l and nongovernm­ental organisati­ons.

The donation handover ceremony was held during a private memorial for the YTL Group founder yesterday.

His eldest son, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, who is also YTL Corporatio­n managing director, said the donation was in honour and memory of his late father.

“My father laid the foundation on which our family is built, inspiring us with his hard work, integrity, business acumen, wisdom and kindness.

“These core values are what inspire us to continue his passion for philanthro­py and serving those who are in need.

“The 103 beneficiar­ies represent Malaysians from all walks of life and reflect the late Yeoh’s commitment to building this nation.

“I pray that we will be able to continue the good work which my father began through his years of serving his community,” he said.

Representa­tives of 28 organisati­ons were present at the event to receive the cheques.

They included representa­tives from the Heritage of Malaysia Trust who received RM100,000, Breast Cancer Foundation (RM100,000), the National Heart Institute Foundation (RM100,000), Mercy Malaysia (RM100,000), National Council for the Blind (RM100,000), Montfort Boys Town (RM50,000), United Nations Children’s Fund Malaysia (RM50,000), Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (RM30,000), Graduates Associatio­n Selangor (RM30,000) and Indian Athma Sakthi Associatio­n (RM30,000).

Donations to 85 other organisati­ons were given privately before the funeral service on Oct 22.

Among the beneficiar­ies included Hin Hua High School, Klang (RM500,000), Kuen Cheng High School, Kuala Lumpur, (RM300,00), Welfare Associatio­n of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (RM200,000), Tung Shin Hospital (RM200,000), Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation (RM100,000), Silver Jubilee Home of the Aged (RM50,000) and Malaysian Mental Health Associatio­n (RM20,000).

Yeoh died on Oct 18 at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife, Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong, seven children, 27 grandchild­ren and five greatgrand­children.

With a net worth of US$2.1 billion (RM8.8 billion), Yeoh was ranked seventh in the latest edition of Forbes’ Malaysia’s 50 Richest list in March.

He founded YTL in 1955 as a constructi­on company, which flourished into the country’s largest conglomera­te, with interest in technology, hotels, utilities, constructi­on and property management.
