UniKL get Harte between the posts

GOALKEEPER David Harte wants to make his presence felt with Universiti Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (UniKL) in the Malaysian Hockey League, which starts on Jan 3.

Harte comes with a wealth of experience having represented Ireland 203 times and is also ranked among the top 10 goalkeepers in the world.

The Irish captain has made five appearances in the European Cup (2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017).

He also played in last year’s Rio Olympics and will make his World Cup debut in India next year.

The 29-year-old, who has won numerous medals at international and club levels, was named as FIH’s best goalkeeper in 2015 and 2016.

“My most memorable moment in hockey has to be the Rio Olympic Games.

“It was Ireland’s first appearance at the Olympics in 108 years,” said Harte yesterday.

“The defeat to South Korea in Dublin in 2012 in the final of the London Olympics qualifier rates as my biggest disappointment.”

Harte has represented SCHC and SV Kampong of the Netherlands along with Dabang Mumbai in the India league.

“I've always enjoyed the style of hockey Malaysian teams play.

“Having played against Malaysia many times before, I am aware of their open play and expressive style,” said Harte.

When asked why he opted for the MHL, Harte said: “I came here because of UniKL coach Arul Selvaraj.”

“I have known him for many years.

“I was offered to play here before but I could not then due to other commitments.

“I want to use my experience and help the young team do well in the MHL.

“We will see where we end up in February,” he added.
