NST exposé on Wang Kelian triggers calls for truth, justice
KUALA LUMPUR: The New Straits Times ’ exposé on the death camps in Wang Kelian, Perlis, has sparked outrage and shock among Netizens, who want the authorities to uncover the truth behind the biggest crime against humanity in Malaysian history.
The article, titled “The secrets of Wang Kelian exposed”, went viral yesterday. Netizens are calling for justice. Most Netizens said the authorities must take stern action against those responsible for the mass killings and those behind the human trafficking syndicates.
Facebook user Aiman Rashad said: “I commend the courageous journalism in attempting to expose and hold the people in authority accountable.
“However, it’s clear some specifics in the report, such as the names of officers, are being withheld. May this report lead to the truth and justice.”
Kakchik Alina Abdullah questioned the authorities for allegedly choosing not to do anything about the camps as soon as they were discovered.
“One shocking discovery was that the authorities, particularly the Perlis police, knew the existence of these jungle camps in Wang Kelian in early January 2015, but had allegedly chosen not to do anything about them until half a year later.”
Other Netizens praised NST for its investigative journalism.
“Good job (NST) team in revealing this. Though it raises more questions than answers,” said Ooi Beng Cheang on Facebook.
Stanley Loh said: “I would think the person who ordered the destruction of the death camp(s) may have an ulterior motive.”
“Well done, NST. This is what journalism ought to be. You won back a reader,” said Vincent Chin, who praised the reporters who broke the story.
Another Netizen, Mike Mae Yip, said he respected the reporters for risking their safety in pursuit of the truth.
“What a great piece of investigative journalism.
“I salute your courage and tenacity in pursuing this as it was clearly one that could endanger your own safety.”
