THE state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has received 16 more complaints of possible fake baby milk formula.

The latest discovery followed the first, which was unearthed in a raid earlier this month.

State ministry director Khairul Anwar Bachok said nine complaints were from Johor Baru, while others were from Pontian (six) and Batu Pahat (one).

“The complaints were from parents whose children fell sick after consuming the baby formula or noticed irregularities with the packaging of the formula they bought. In each case, we have taken samples from the formula and sent them to the Chemistry Department for testing.”

Earlier this month, the ministry’s state office seized 210 boxes of fake baby milk formula, worth RM42,000, from five supermarkets and pharmacies in Johor Baru.

On the results of the analysis, Khairul Anwar said they were expected to be ready next week.

He said this at the Econsave hypermarket in Senai to check on the implementation of the Festive Season Price Control Scheme. Eleven goods have been listed under the scheme in conjunction with Christmas celebrations between Dec 23 and 27.

“We have not received any complaints about traders flouting the rules under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.”

He said between Jan 1 and Nov 30, the agency checked 35,000 premises in the state.

“We seized RM1.64 million worth of items. A total of 769 cases have been recorded, of which 523 were issued with compounds, while others were brought to court.”

He said the majority of the offences were under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and Weights and Measures Act 1972.
