Mother, boyfriend held over alleged abuse of 10-month-old
KAJANG: Police have arrested a couple over suspicion of abusing a 10-month-old girl after finding that the baby had blood on her diapers, with bruises all over her body.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff said police received a report on the alleged abuse from a 25-year-old man, who was the boyfriend of the victim’s mother, on Friday.
“The victim was vomiting, there were bruises on her stomach, back, ears and head. There was also bloodstains on her diapers.
“Checks by a doctor revealed that her hymen was intact and there were no injuries on her private parts.
“The bruises on the victim’s body were believed to be due to abuse,” he said in a statement.
The man said the victim was sent to a nursery in Taman Desa Baiduri, Cheras, in the morning and his 21-year-old girlfriend had picked up the child from the nursery about 7pm.
The man was then informed that the victim was vomiting and there was bloodstains on her diapers. He immediately took the victim to a nearby clinic and the doctor referred him to Kuala Lumpur Hospital .
The duo told the police they did not think the babysitter was abusing the child as the babysitter had taken good care of the woman’s older child before this.
Dzaffir said initial investigation showed that the man was not the victim’s father, and the duo was not married.
He said police had since arrested the man and the victim’s mother to assist in investigations.
“The man was arrested in Kajang while the woman was arrested in Ampang. Checks revealed both had criminal and drug use records.
“They have been remanded for four days, until Dec 27,” he said.
The victim has two siblings — aged three and five — and they were brought to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for check-ups on signs of abuse.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for abuse.
