BARISAN Nasional deputy chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is keeping mum on the much-talked-about BN Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday.

It has been speculated that the meeting, involving BN’s 13 component parties, set to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, would likely discuss preparations for the 14th General Election (GE14).

Leaders of component parties have received invitations to the meeting.

Zahid, who is also Umno vicepresident and deputy prime minister, declined to elaborate when asked about the “special meeting”.

“I do not know (if there is anything special during the meeting). Let us have our meeting first and only then you will know what is special about the meeting,” he said during his visit to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex here yesterday.

With him were Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot and Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

Several component party leaders had confirmed that the meeting, to be chaired BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak, would be held, fuelling speculation that GE14 would be held early next year.

Sarawak BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu secretary-general, confirmed that the party had received an invitation to the meeting.

“The meeting will fine-tune our machinery ahead of the general election.”

Gerakan deputy president Datuk Dr Cheah Soon Hai also confirmed there was a meeting, but he declined to comment on its agenda.

The New Straits Times has learnt that BN would launch a portal, which would serve as one of the coalition’s election campaign tools on that day.

The “special meeting” will be held after that.
